PUBLIC SPEAKING
On the 5th of October, the school welcomed Alan Devine also known as Louie from Fair City, to help TY students improve on their public speaking. To start off Alan told us about public speaking. He told us abut the importance of first impressions especially in situations like job interviews. He then went on to tell us what we needed to do to be able to deliver a speech. He taught us three thins 1. Strong walk 2. Powerful stance 3. Granny Devines smile . We then proceeded into our first game which involved standing in front of the class saying 'Here's a good one' and reciting a joke Alan had previously written.
The next game we played was called the eliminator, this involved us standing in a circle and carrying out a selection of dance moves to the nursery 'Old King Cole'. We then played an eye contact game as eye contact in a very important thing to do when delivering a speech. The game then stepped up a bit while having to do hand gestures while still keeping the eye contact., then Alan added in random questions while still keeping eye contact and using hand gestures.
Alan then talked to us about speech writing he told us examples of ones he has heard before including girl with red hair who was bullied, a sheep farmer and many more. He then gave us handouts on how to write a speech and told us he would be returning a week later to hear the speeches we had prepared.
The Friday after, Alan returned and was ready to hear all our speaches. Everyone was nervous but felt a bit more confident from the previous week. After each speech Alan critiqued us on what we did well and what we could improve on.
Overall, after those two days I felt a lot more confident speaking in pubic and found the workshop very beneficial for me now and for in the future.
